EMC Timefinder Deisgn

The customer had purchased an EMC DMX2000 disk array which would store their HR Oracle database. They would use EMC Timefinder to create a point-in-time copy of the database and present the storage for backup.

Our consultant worked with the EMC engineer to identify the primary and BCV disks within the array. The consultant then used the EMC inq command to create a table which showed the primary and BCV disk ID's. The ID's would be used to pair the primary and BCV disks.

The consultant then created UNIX scripts, calling the Timefinder symcli, to perform the following tasks:

  • Switch the Oracle database to hot standby mode
  • Synchronise the primary and BCV disks
  • Switch the Oracle databse to normal mode
  • Export the BCV disks from the database server
  • Import the BCV disks to the backup server
  • Mount the BCV disks
  • Run a consistency check on the data held on the BCV disks
  • Perform a backup of the BCV disks
  • Send appropriate messages to the systems management tool during all stages

The design was fully tested and documented and a skills transfer was agreed with the bank's permanent staff.
